The Reattu Museum

This is an institution that takes itself very (too?) seriously and, perhaps, suffers a little from that. Housed in the former Grand Priory of the Knights of Malta (The Knights Hospitaler) of the 16th century, when not being used for temporary exhibitions, the museum contains a thoroughly idiosyncratic collection of local and national eighteenth century French painting, much of which one can really live without seeing. However on the top floor (usually) is a collection of Picasso drawings donated (according to local legend) to the town by the great man (a frequent visitor to the town's bull fights) when he realised that in spite of the fact that Van Gogh painted more than a hundred of his world-famous paintings during his eighteen months stay in the town, none has remained there. The fifty seven drawings are wonderful. The building itself is also completely glorious and worth a visit in its own right.

2023 Update, The interior of this fine old building have been given the Christian Lacroix interior décor treatment which is a great pity.
