Notre Dame de La Major

This is not necessarily the second most important church in Arles but it exists just to the east of the Amphitheatre and is definitely worth a visit as it is of great cultural importance in the town. It is the patron church of the gardiens (farmers) of the Camargue. Their particular saint, St George, possibly an equine connection, is commemorated with a small sculpture of the great man slaying his dragon.

The church is not always open and is not especially remarkable art historically but it is well worth as visit if you can get in as it counts for a lot in local culture. Not for nothing is it more popular for local marriages than St Trophime. It is also the centre, of course, of the May 1st celebrations (see below) when the St George statue is taken from the church  and a huge assembly of guardians of the Camargue, all mounted and in full costume who have paraded into the square are blessed by the priest. If you are lucky enough to be in town on the first of May, it is a sight not to be missed.
